Peruvian President Dina Boluarte appointed José Arista Arbildo as the country’s new economy and finance minister in a partial reshuffling of her cabinet on Wednesday, according to the official gazette El Peruano.

Arista was reappointed along with three other ministers during a ceremony at the government palace on Tuesday, succeeding Alex Conteras in the post, El Peruano reported on Wednesday.

Boluarte also appointed Walter Astudillo as defense minister, Rómulo Mucho as energy and mining minister and Juan Castro as environment minister, the gazette added.

Arista was previously appointed economy and finance minister in November 2022 by former President Manuel Merino after Congress removed President Martín Vizcarra from office, but he resigned after days of protests in Peru that left two people dead.

Before that, Arista was a director of state-owned lender Banco de la Nación del Perú, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Latin American development bank CAF from 2006 to 2010.

Boluarte appointed Contreras as economy and finance minister in December 2022 after the previous minister, Kurt Burneo, stepped down on the same day as former President Pedro Castillo said he would dissolve Congress and establish an emergency government rather than face an impeachment vote.
