Brazilian cash-and-carry retailer Assaí said a former CEO of Atacadão, a rival cash-and-carry retailer owned by French giant Carrefour, has joined the firm as an independent board member.

The appointment of Roberto Müssnich comes amid reports that Brazilian retailer Mateus, a strong regional player in the north of the country, wants to take control of Assaí, which was until recently controlled by French retailer Casino. Both Mateus and Assaí denied the reports.

Meanwhile, Brazilian water and sanitation company Iguá Saneamento and the cement division of the Brazilian Votorantim conglomerate both appointed new CFOs.

Iguá tapped Douglas Casagrande as its new finance chief, the company said in a securities filing on Monday. He is a former CFO of Corsan, the Rio Grande do Sul water company that was privatized last year and is now controlled by Aegea.

Votorantim Cimentos, for its part, named Antonio Miguel Sousa Pelicano CFO, it said in a securities filing. Portuguese-born Sousa previously held the same post at the firm’s subsidiary for Europe, Africa, and Asia. He is also a former CFO of Portuguese cement company Cimpor.
